ICT for Education

ICT for education is a never ending world where interaction, collaboration and mobility are not just buzz words but are becoming an essential part of teaching and learning.  ICT for education can encompass a wide range of technologies that most British children now take for granted such as interactive whiteboards, ICT suites, digital cameras and laptops, each providing pupils with a great way to learn.

As wireless technology has developed to a point now where it is fast and importantly, reliable, mobile technology in the form of laptops and netbooks has gradually started to replace the ‘traditional’ ICT Suite.  The ICT Suite in most schools comprises 20 or 30 PC workstations all hard wired into the schools network and provided that fast and reliable means for teaching.  The frustration of slow wireless login times and connections ‘dropping off’ midway through a lesson meant that ICT suites had an important place for ICT for education technology.

But this is all changing with schools now able to take advantage of wireless connection speeds that would put many wired connections to shame and a confidence that managed wireless solutions will “just work!”

Such mobile learning networks and new devices like the increasingly popular tablet are enabling teachers to take ICT for education almost anywhere on the campus, indoors or outdoors.  With new tablet devices pupils can easy move to the best location for the lesson, take photographs, make videos, research their facts on the internet and use software.

There is also no doubt that children, of any age, are excited by the new tablet technology and this inspiration can only be a good thing to feed imagination.  Admittedly the initial cost of a tablet is high when compared with a netbook but the mobility, long battery life, built-in high quality camera and low cost software does help to close this gap.

There seems to be little doubt too that the number of Apps coming onto the market will continue to make the tablet device an ever growing tool in ICT for education.  New music Apps will mean students can create and compose on a tablet, record their own podcast, upload to the web and use a text application to write their script.

So are ICT Suites going to be a thing of the past?  I doubt it.  New mobile working and increased pressure for classroom space may significantly reduce the number of ICT suites but ICT for education will still find a home in a dedicated suite.
